Yahoo Mail
Yahoo! Mail is a Web-based e-mail (Webmail) service from Yahoo!. That is, the service requires only a Web browser, not special software. It is one of the biggest e-mail providers on the Internet, serving millions of users.
History
Yahoo! Mail was born in 1997 when Yahoo! bought Four11 Corporation and renamed its existing Rocketmail service.
An e-mail war between Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Google started on April 1, 2004, when Google announced that it was working on a webmail service called Gmail that would offer a 1 GB storage quota. On June 15, Yahoo! responded by upgrading their e-mail service to have three distinct account types:
- Free: 100 MB quota, 10 MB attachments, plus basic protection against spam and viruses. Before the change, these accounts had a quota between 6 and 4 megabytes in size.
- Plus: 2 GB quota, plus POP3 access.
- Additionally, a user can pay a nominal fee to have a custom e-mail address and domain name.
