Yacht

A yacht was originally defined as a light fast sailing-ship used to convey important persons. In later parlance, the definition came to mean any vessel, other than a dinghy, propelled by sail or power and used for pleasure cruising and/or racing on the water.

A typical sailing yacht (mono-hull) can vary in length from around 15 feet to 70 feet or more. It is also fitted with a keel underneath that can be removable or fixed to enable the boat to move forward with the additional help of the rudder,in a controlled manner, using the forces exerted by the wind on the sails.

The motive force for sailing being the wind, it is more economical than any other means of propulsion and, to be topical, is also environmentally friendly.

Sailing boats in history were the province of fishermen and those transporting goods across the seas. Sailing is an art that needs much practice to do well. The sailing of yachts became initially the province of the elite of society in Europe, but today has become the pastime of many worldwide.

There are also motor yachts. These are the preserve of the wealthy, as fuel for the size of engines used is expensive.

King Charles II of England is mentioned as enjoying the sport in the diaries of Samuel Pepys.
