World Park Base
World Park Base is a non-governmental Antarctic base located on Ross Island in Ross Dependency.
The international environmental organization Greenpeace established World Park Base in the late 1980's in order to press it's demand for the Antarctic Treaty nations to declare all of the continent of Antarctica a World Park, which would make the entire continent off-limits to commrecial exploitation and pollution, and only permitting limited scientific research.
This base prides itself on 'setting a good example for the other bases', such as removing all of it's refuse from Antarctica, unlike nearby McMurdo Station which simply dumps it's refuse into the sea.
The official attitude amongst the Antarctic Treaty nations is that World Park Base is to be ignored and that no assistance be given to it, although New Zealand, which claims juristiction over Ross Dependency, would assist if a life-threatening situation arises.
