Winchester, England

I just searched google and close to a half million webpages that have "Winchester" in them without the words England or United Kingdom. We all must be careful when naming articles - this is an encyclopedia with an international focus. Therefore I am changing this page into an index page. --maveric149

There are now "about 756,000". That's less than half of the total number of matches for "" ("about 1,770,000"), though. The one in England is easily the biggest place out of the ones we've got articles for, and since it used to be the capital of England, I think it counts as the most historically significant, too. So can we have it at Winchester, and have a separate Winchester (disambiguation) page to list the others on? At the moment, Winchester redirects to Winchester, England, which doesn't help anyone. -- Oliver P. 09:35 13 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Winchester? Whats that?

Winchester has little meaning outside of England. As said above, this is an international page, and it should lead to the disambiguation page.

The article quite clearly states that Winchester is in England in the first sentence. Please don't go moving things about without consulting and gaining consensus. You also seem to have botched the move and duplicated the disambiguation page which will probably need to be sorted out by an administrator. Winchester might have little meaning to you, but then that's why people look things up in encyclopaedias isn't it? As a well-known English city and the former capital, Winchester is sufficiently well known in comparison to the places named after it to get the primary page, with a note at the top to avoid confusion. Bah, I really messed that one up :-)

Anyway, things are back to how they were beforehand.

By standards, either the article on the 'real' Winchester should be at Winchester and the disambig at Winchester (disambiguation) linked therefrom, or at Winchester, England with the disambig at Winchester with no link from the 'real' place's page. The current setup is... non-optimal. Reminiscent of the Georgia farce^Wfuss.
