William Stoughton



         


Born in 1631, and raised in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, William Stoughton trained as a minister in Cromwell's England.

He would later return to Massachusetts and serve in various positions in the colonial government. By the early 1690s he was colonial chief magistrate. In 1692 he acted as judge and prosecutor during the Salem Witch Trials.
