William George Arthur Ormsby-Gore, 4th Baron Harlech



         


William George Arthur Ormsby-Gore, 4th Baron Harlech (1885 - 1964), British Conservative politician and banker.

MP for Stafford 1918 to 1938 when he was elevated to the peerage on the death of his father. Parliamentary under-secretary to the Colonies 1922-9 (with a brief interruption during the short lived Labour government of 1924). He was Colonial Secretary 1936-8 under Neville Chamberlain. During World War II he was British high commissioner in South Africa (1941-4).

After retiring from the Commons he served on the board of Midland Bank, owner of a banking house founded by his family.

His son, the fifth baron, followed him into politics and served as British ambassador to Washington in the 1960's.
