White trillium
Trillium grandiflorum, also White trillium, or Large-flowered trillium, or snow trillium, is a member of the Trilliaceae family (formerly part of the Liliaceae) and is native to northeast United States and southeast Canada. The stalkless flower develops directly over a whorl of three leaves. The flower is not apparent in its closed state, but soon opens to a large, triple-petaled bloom. As the flower ages, it turns pink. A cultivar is available for gardening.
This flower is often most common on steep slopes, because it is a favorite food of white-tailed deer and highly subject to their predation. The deer dislike grazing on steep slopes.
The White trillium is the provincial flower of Ontario, Canada.
