Westwood, Los Angeles, California

Westwood, or Westwood Village, is a district on the west side of the City of Los Angeles, California, USA.

Developed by the Janss family in the 1920s, it is known for its proximity to UCLA. A center of movie-going in West Los Angeles—and the site of many movie premieres—it is home to several vintage theaters, including the Pacific Crest, the Fox Village and the Bruin.

Westwood is also home to the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery, the last resting place of many of Hollywood's biggest stars.

This small shopping district has been successful in retaining its cozy village atmosphere even as high-rise office towers went up around it, and the nearby Interstate 405 freeway and the intersection of Wilshire and Westwood Boulevards became choked by tens of thousands of cars per day. This oversight in planning has been blamed on the cancellation of the Beverly Hills Freeway by local politician multiplexes and megaplexes throughout the greater Los Angeles area, which gave many geographically distant moviegoers a diversity of options closer to home.
