Walter Murch (1943 - ) started editing sound with Francis Ford Coppola's The Rain People. From there, he worked on American Graffiti and The Godfather, Part II before winning an Oscar for his efforts with sound in The Conversation. He has directed one film, Return to Oz, but is still known primarily for his sound efforts, most notably in Apocalypse Now, for which he won another Oscar.
