Walt Disney Imagineering

Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) is the research and development arm of The Walt Disney Company. The people who work at Disney Imagineering are called Imagineers. Past Imagineers include Alan Kay, Bran Ferren, and Danny Hillis.

WDI has its origins in the 1950s when Walt Disney decided he wanted to build a theme park--what we now call Disneyland. Walt culled his best animators and other creative people from his studios to design the park and get it built. They became known as Imagineers.

WDI was originally called WED Enterprises--WED being the initials of Walter Elias Disney. In the 1980s, WED Enterprises became Walt Disney Imagineering.
