Voorschoten (population: 22,635) is a town in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It is a smaller town in the Randstad, enclosed by the cities of Leiden and The Hague. The municipality covers an area of 11.60 km².
Voorschoten consists of a small community in the Randstad, which allies countryside life with the proximity to big commercial centres such as the Hague, Leiden and Amsterdam. Its situation makes it ideal for living, with very good transport conenctions to most of the Netherlands and to the rest of the world ( 30 minutes by train from Schiphol Airport).WR
Since Voorschoten is very close to Leiden (no more than 3 kilometers away), it has no facilities such as a hospital or a theatre. Many children go to Leiden for their secundairy education (or to other neighbouring towns, such as Wassenaar). In school, but also on the job or in bars, people from both places meet.
People from Leiden often don't like the people from Voorschoten, as they think that "Voorschotenaren" make use of Leiden's roads and facilities, without paying taxes for it. This is a common subject for conversations, and it is also common for people from Leiden to taunt the "Voorschotenaren" with the fact that Voorschoten is so small.
On the other hand, "Voorschotenaren" dislike Leiden's policy of demanding newly build houses in Voorschoten for Leiden's urgent cases, as this greatly increases waiting time for a house for "Voorschotenaren" themselves. These are just examples of local discords that are always found between neighboring municapilities, ranging from street gangs to countries and even whole continents.
