Verdandi is one of the three norns in Norse Mythology. Her name means "being".

A fictional character based on her appears in the manga and anime series Oh! My Goddess, called Belldandy. The name started out as Verdandi, and was translate to Japanese. When the manga came to the English world, it was translated back instead of using the precedence.
