The USS Springfield (SSN-761) was commissioned in 1993 and is named after the cities of Springfield, Massachusetts and Springfield, Illinois. An Improved Los Angeles class attack submarine, Springfield is capable of shooting ADCAP torpedoes and Tomahawk missiles. As of 2004, Springfield has deployed overseas six times, and earned two meritorious unit commendations and several Battle "E" efficiency awards, among other decorations. Beginning in mid-2004, Springfield began an extensive overhaul and modernization period at Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Connecticut. This is the first overhaul attempted by Electric Boat. In addition to normal periodic maintenance and repairs, Springfield is receiving extensive modernization in fire control systems, sonar processing, weapons launch systems, and communications outfit, as well as stealth improvements and engine room upgrades. The crew of the USS Springfield is fortunate to have the support of the Navy League of the United States, New York City chapter, the Sub Vets of Springfield, Illinois, and Springfield, Massachusetts, and to be adopted by the Town of Stonington, Connecticut.
