Urbanized Area

An Urbanized Area is a concept used by demographers at the U.S. Census Bureau to measure the population of a city even if much of the population lives outside of the political boundaries of the city. This is similar to a metropolitan area.

It is defined as: "An area consisting of a central place(s) and adjacent territory with a general population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile of land area that together have a minimum residential population of at least 50,000 people." (from the Glossary at http://factfinder.census.gov)
