Universal Music is the largest major label in the record industry, with a 23% market share. It was originally the record label of Universal Studios. The present organisation was formed when its owners, Seagram, bought PolyGram and merged it.
Seagram has since sold Universal Music and Universal Studios to Vivendi. See also Vivendi Universal.
In October 2003, General Electric and Vivendi agreed to merge NBC and Vivendi Universal Entertainment, with the new company to be named NBC Universal.
