Type design is the art of designing typefaces, which may then be manufactured as fonts. Someone who designs type is called a type designer, not a font designer, nor a fontologist, nor an alphabetician.
A common mistake is to call a type designer a "fontographer." Fontographer is a Macromedia software product some type designers use to design type and output as digital font files.
