municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On January 1st, 2002 Tongeren had a total population of 29,621 (14,560 males and 15,061 females). The total area is 87.74 km² which gives a population density of 337.60 inhabitants per km². Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium. Known as Atuatuca Tungrorum to the Romans, it was the administrative centre of the district Tungri under their rule.
