This Timeline of (small-l) liberal parties in Australia is limited to liberal parties with substantial support, mainly proved by having had a representation in parliament. The sign ⇒ means a reference to another party in that scheme. Parties printed in italic are parties outside the liberal spectrum. For inclusion in this scheme it isn't necesary so that parties labeled themselves as a liberal party. Be aware that the main conservative current uses the name liberal, but is at the same time internationally not considered to be a liberal party.

Commonwealth Liberals

• 1880s: The Free Trade Party is formed
• 1909: The FTP merged with the ⇒ Protectionist Party into the Commonwealth Liberal Party
• 1916: The CLP merged into the new conservative Nationalist Party of Australia

• 1880s: The Protectionist Party is formed
• 1908: The PP merged with ⇒ Free Trade Party into the ⇒ Commonwealth Liberal Party

Democrats

• 1966: The Liberal Reform Group seceded from the conservative Liberal Party of Australia. it is renamed Liberal Reform Movement in 1969 and Australia Party in 1969
• 1977: The AP merged with dissident members of the Liberal Party of Australia into present-day Australian Democrats
• 2003: A faction formed the ⇒ Australian Progressive Alliance
