The War Machines is a 4 episode Doctor Who serial. It is the tenth (last) story in the third season, featuring William Hartnell as The Doctor.

Sypnosis

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

The TARDIS lands in London, near the Post Office Tower. He is unsettled by it. They meet Professor Brett, the creator of WOTAN (Will Operating Thought ANalogue), an advanced computer that even knows what TARDIS stands for! On C-Day, WOTAN will be linked and control other major computers e.g. The White House, Cape Kennedy, Royal Navy etc. WOTAN begins to have its own agenda and takes control of Professor Brett through a hypnotic beeping noise. Two others are taken other and become leaders to carry put WOTAN's will. They hypnotise many men to work down telephone lines. Dodo gets hypnotised this way and tries to get the Doctor hypnotised to, but he breaks her out of it. WOTAN is going to send out War Machines and take over the world.

The Doctor alerts the army but the bullets are useless against a War Machine. The Doctor manages to capture a War Machine and change its programming. He has a way of stopping them now. He sends it up to WOTAN and destroys it. The hypnotised people snap out of it.

Notes

  1. WOTAN refers to the Doctor throughout as 'Doctor Who', the only time that the character is ever given this name in the series' dialogue (although he is credited as such on almost every episode up to and including those of the 18th season, adopts the alias "Doctor von Wer" - a rough German approximation of "Doctor Who" - in The Highlanders and signs himself "Dr. W" in The Savages
