The Royal Oak

The Royal Oak is the name given to the oak tree outside of Boscobel House where Charles II famously hid to escape Puritan Roundheads at the end of the English Civil War on his way to France. The image of a king hiding in a tree has become an indelible image in the English historical imagination.

It subsequently became one of the most popular pub names in England.
