The Mock Turtle

This character, devised by Lewis Carroll, from his hugely popular book Alice In Wonderland has a name that is a pun on the soup that was popular in the Victorian period, "mock turtle". Carroll enjoyed such puns on Victorian fashions and etiquette, and showed this frequently. There are many examples within Alice In Wonderland, this character being one of them. The description and drawing by John Tenniel give comedy value to The Mock Turtle, as he is clearly a collection of creatures placed together, therefore, not a real turtle as his name rightly suggests.
