The Letter of Marque (1988) is a novel by Patrick O'Brian, the twelfth in the Aubrey–Maturin series. Aubrey is removed from the Navy, and struck off the captain's list, for a crime he did not commit. The crime was committed by highly placed agents of French intelligence. Aubrey's friend Dr. Maturin purchases the Surprise and Aubrey is granted a Letter of Marque as a privateer.
