The Islamic Group

Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya ("Islamic Group") is an Egyptian terrorist group dedicated to the overthrow of the Egyptian goverment and its replacement with an Islamic state. Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman is its preeminent spiritual leader. The group publicly has threatened to retaliate against the United States for his conviction in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Responsible for:

17 November 1997 – Attack at Hatshepsut's temple, Luxor (62 dead)
28 April 1996 – Europa Hotel shooting, Cairo (18 dead)
19 November 1995 – Car bomb attack on the Egyptian embassy, Islamabad, Pakistan (16 dead)
June 1995 – attempt to assassinate Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Also responsible for a spate of tourist shootings (trains and cruise ships sprayed with bullets) in middle and lower Egypt during the early 1990s.
