The Good Earth is a novel by Pearl S. Buck, first published in 1931 which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1938.

It is the story of a peasant family in China in a times of famine, flood, and prosperity. A peasant Wang Lung married O Lan the homely former slave of a wealthy household and through frugality and hard work they brought prosperity to themselves and their progeny. Much of their success is based on acquiring more land, more of the good earth, and conserving the bounty of their harvests. As his wealth increased, Wang Lung was able to purchase the house of the same wealthy family, where he obtained his wife. They had fallen on hard times because of their excesses. Wan Lung is able to educate his children and give them a good life.
It was made into a movie of the same name in 1937.
