Teresa of Leon



         


Princess Teresa of León (1080 - November 11 1130) was daughter of king Alfonso VI of Castile and Leon. In 1096 she married Henry of Burgundy, first Count of Portugal and was the mother of Afonso I of Portugal, the first king of Portugal. Teresa ruled as regent for Afonso and tried to retain the rule of the County, even after her son's majority. She was defeated in battle by her son in 1128 and forced to retire to a convent.
