General Information

The Tenggerese are the descandants of the Majapahit princes. Their population of roughly 600,000 is centered in the Tengger mountains at Mount Bromo in East-Central Java.

Language

The Tenggerese speak an archaic Javanese (Majapahit) dialect called Tengger. Elements of modern Javanese influences in their speeches can be seen.

Religion

96% of the Tenggerese adhere to the Hindu-Buddhist faith. Unlike the Balinese, they worship in in places called punden, danyang, and poten.
