Telford is a planned town in Shropshire, England, that was named after the engineer Thomas Telford. The town has a population of around 125,000. It is administered as part of the Telford and Wrekin unitary authority.
It was built in the 1960s and 1970s as a New town in a former coal-mining area and enveloped a number of pre-existing towns, such as Dawley, Oakengates, Wellington and Madeley. Telford also incorporates the Ironbridge Gorge, a scenic tourist destination.
In 1983 the M54 motorway opened, connecting the town to the M6 and thence the rest of the UK's motorway network.
