Around 1580 the Vicenza Accademia Olimpica commissioned the famous architect Andrea Palladio to plan a new theater for the eastern part of Vicenza's downtown. Palladio actually completed the design of the theater but couldn't assist in the building because he died in the same year. The local architect Vincenzo Scamozzi actually directed its building.
