In art history, symbolists were 19th century writers and artists, mostly from France, who rejected realism and used symbols to evoke ideas and emotions. See symbolism (arts)


In Christianity, symbolists are those who believe that the bread and wine used in the Eucharist are symbols and not literally the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.
