Superdeformed

In anime and manga, characters which are drawn in a highly exaggerated manner are said to be super deformed (SD). Super deformed characters are typically small and chubby with deformed limbs and oversized heads, and may be used to express intense emotion, especially in the cases of anger or surprise. They are meant to be cute and are often used in humorous diversions from the storyline, though some series have entire Super Deformed parody series running alongside the main series, as in Gundam.

Many amateur anime artists enjoy drawing super-deformed both because the style is cute and because it is relatively easy to draw. A super-deformed head is usually about half of the entire body, and its eyes about half of the head, though of course different artists use different proportions.

Sometimes Chibi is used interchangeably (chiefly in art) to describe the aforementioned instead of Superdeformed.

Chibi is used to describe characters with more childlike features instead of superdeformed, and is sometimes used to describe a child version of an anime or manga character, especially when used as a modifier.
