Super Mario Sunshine is the latest title in the Super Mario series, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto. It was released in the U.S. in August 2002, nine months after the release of the GameCube, since the game was not ready in time for the system's launch.
It is Mario's premier debut on the Nintendo Gamecube; Mario was rescued by Luigi in Luigi's Mansion, but this is his first game of his own. When Mario arrives on tropical Isle Delfino, the once-pristine island is polluted and plastered with graffiti. Even worse, the true culprit is disguised as Mario, therefore the real Mario is framed! Now instead of enjoying a relaxing vacation with Princess Peach, Mario has to clean up the place and track down the real culprit.
In the game Mario has to visit different parts of Isle Delfino, including an amusement park and a bustling harbor. Mario must recover the Shine Sprites that have left their traditional gathering spot in Delfino Plaza, the hub area of the game. Mysterious Mario look-alike "Shadow Mario" seems to be behind the trouble on the island.
Mario Sunshine is the first game in which Mario uses a weapon of some sort. Mario's new multipurpose water pack, FLUDD, lets Mario spray goop away, hover over danger, soar to new heights, and speed around the island. Once you beat the game the character that used to just give you sunglasses gives you a different shirt as well.
Yoshi is also playable in Super Mario Sunshine. Yoshi can be used to eat the butterflies around the levels to get yellow or blue coins. You can also use him to get rid of the yellow slime that is scattered around in the overworld.
The music was produced by Koji Kondo.
