Steven Raymond Christian (b. 1951) is the mayor of Pitcairn Island, a British dependency in the Pacific Ocean. As such, he is head of what is quite likely the smallest generally recognized country (as opposed to a micronation) in the world with regard to population, as there are only fifty or so Pitcairn Islanders. He also acts as the island's dentist and X-ray technician.
Christian is a lineal descendant of Fletcher Christian, leader of the mutineers in the late 18th Century on the HMS Bounty, a story told in the 1932 Nordoff and Hall novel and several subsequent motion picture versions as Mutiny on the Bounty. Pitcairn Island is the last remaining British colony in the Pacific, all of the others having opted for independence, which is hardly a practicable option for a community the size of Pitcairn.
