Statler & Waldorf are Muppets, a pair of grumpy old men who first appeared in The Muppet Show heckling the rest of the cast from their balcony seats. (In Muppets Tonight, based around a television show rather than a theatre, they were shown watching the show at home but still making rude comments.)
Statler & Waldorf are named after posh New York City hotels, the Statler Hotel and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The two are brothers-in-law, as Waldorf's wife, Astoria, is Statler's sister (as well as the Statler muppet in drag).
