Stan Shebs

I'm a software engineer who's worked on the GNU project for many years, first at Apple Computer doing the oft-disbelieved port of GCC to the Mac, then Cygnus Solutions working on GDB, then Apple again working on GCC for Mac OS X. In my younger days I got a PhD doing research on Lisp implementation techniques.

My personal interests are varied and include software, stamp collecting, sailing ships, model ships, history, rock climbing, mountaineering, languages, and literature (novels mostly).

My historical specialties run to ancient history and military history, as well as the historical aspects of my random interests.

I can read German, but struggle with French and Italian.

Dumping my life's accumulated factoids into BambooWeb seems like a fun thing to do, we'll see how it goes. Two weeks later, it seems more like being an ADD-afflicted magpie in a bottle cap factory! Six months later, it's consuming nearly all of my waking moments... Eighteen months later, not as many of the waking moments, but I think about it a lot when doing other things.

When I don't feel like doing "real" work, it's always fun to find out all the different articles that a random TLA connects to.

For Christmas 2003, Santa brought a 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary! Fear me. :-)
