History

They self-released their debut album, Tormented, in November 1996. Their sophomore album, Dysfunction (release on Elektra Records), was their breakthrough.

Staind made their first breakthrough after first having a row with Fred Durst before playing in support of Limp Bizkit in October 1997. Despite the row, Fred Durst was so impressed by Staind's live performance that night that he later set up their first record deal. Staind toured with Limp Bizkit during the summer of 2000, which set them up for their smash hit 2001 album Break The Cycle. Aaron Lewis and Fred Durst performed together live, on one occasion doing a live acoustic set to the accompaniment of hundreds of waving cigarette lighters. The video shot at the event proved popular, and has received more airplay on some TV stations than any of Staind's official videos. Despite the criticism of the video, which features Fred Durst shouting encouragement to the crowd (Biloxi! This is the real motherf*cking deal, y'all! Feeling those lighters) above Aaron Lewis' talented guitar solo, it has done much to increase their popularity.

Staind embarked on a world-wide tour in 2003 to promote 14 Shades Of Grey. Their appearance at Reading Festival during the tour had another impromptu acoustic set, this time due to equipment failure.
