Spelthorne is a local government district and borough in Surrey, England. It includes the towns of Ashford, Laleham, Shepperton, Staines, Stanwell and Sunbury.
The borough was originally part of Middlesex. When the rest of Middlesex was absorbed into Greater London in 1965, the area of Spelthorne was transferred to Surrey. On April 1, 1974 the Sunbury and Staines urban districts were merged to form the borough of Spelthorne.
The borough remained inside the Metropolitan Police District, and was not transferred to Surrey Police until 2000.
The district is named after an ancient hundred of Middlesex, which covered also East Bedfont, Feltham and Hanworth, all in the London Borough of Hounslow.
