Spangles were Cellophane wrapped square boiled sweets, bought in a paper tube comparible to Starburst in dimensions. They were maufactured by Mars Ltd in the United Kingdom.
The humble Spangle has taken on a totemic significance for those in the United Kingdom. People are prone to bouts of nostalgia, not always in a merely wistful sense but sometimes in an attempt to find common ground with those we are not familiar with. At such times a common bond can be forged by discussion about much loved television shows, performers, or confectionery. The question in nostalgic discussions "What ever happened to Spangles?" became so frequent that Spangles became a shortcut to unabashed discussions about nostalgia, particularly amongst those born between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s in Britain. And now, with British TV awash in nostalgic programming, any mention of the Spangle can provoke a sneer amongst those of younger generations who feel that their parents are now choking to death on their own pasts to the extent that they no longer have goals for the future.
