Sovdepia or Sovdepiya was a derogatory name for Soviet Russia and later Soviet Union by those who were against the Bolshevik rule. The word derives from the abbreviation for "Sovet Deputatov", i.e., "Council of Deputies" (Council of Workers' Deputies, "Councils of Workers', Peasants' and Soldiers' Deputies", later Council of People's Deputies), which were the local authority, see Congress of People's Deputies.
Modern usage may also refer to the authoritarian and bureaucratic style of rule and management characteristic of the Soviet Union.
