South Wimbledon tube station

South Wimbledon (Merton) station is not actually situated in Wimbledon. It was given this name because of snobbery as it was thought that Wimbledon had a higher social standing than Merton. It is similar to the way Clapham Junction was given its name, although it is situated in Battersea. The railway companies that built that station felt Clapham had a higher status than Battersea. All the stations on the Morden Branch, south of Clapham North, of what is now London Transport's Northern Line were designed internally by the Underground Group's civil engineering department. The frontages are early examples of the work of Charles Henry Holden. All except Morden itself are Grade II listed buildings and are early examples of his work for what was to become the London Passenger Transport Board.
