South Ferry

South Ferry is at the southern tip of Manhattan Island in New York City.

South Ferry is the embarkation point for ferries to Staten Island, Liberty Island, Ellis Island and Governor's Island, the latter currently for access to the Coast Guard base there only . Nearby is Castle Garden and Bowling Green.

South Ferry is well served by subways, including the Whitehall Street station of the BMT Broadway Line (W and R trains), South Ferry station on the West Side IRT (1 train) and Bowling Green station on the East Side IRT (4 and 5 trains). South Ferry also hosted a four-track elevated terminal with access to all Manhattan elevated train lines running up 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 9th Avenues. These lines were discontinued in stages from 1940 to 1955.

The origin of the name "South Ferry" is probably one of the more misunderstood trivia, even to most New Yorkers. One would suppose that it is so called because it is at the southern tip of Manhattan, and it hosts ferries. In actuality, it was named for one of the ferry lines that operated there, the South Ferry that operated between South Ferry in Manhattan and its other terminal, also called "South Ferry," at the foot of Atlantic Avenue, in Brooklyn, New York.
