The silver fern is a species of tree fern endemic to New Zealand.
Silver fern (Cyathea dealbata) is the commonly used name for what the Maori call Ponga. The underside of the fronds have a distinctive silver colouration, which made them useful for laying along tracks for night walking.
The silver fern is used as an emblem on the clothing and marketing of many sports teams.
"Silver Ferns" is the name of the New Zealand netball team, world champions in 2003 at Jamaica.
