Sidney Gottlieb (August 3, 1918 - March 7, 1999) was the head of the CIA's MKULTRA project. Gottlieb was born in the Bronx under the name Joseph Schneider. He received a Ph.D. in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology.
In 1951, Gottlieb joined the CIA. He was a poisons expert who hatched schemes to assassinate Fidel Castro using a poisoned cigar, then a poisoned wetsuit, and also an exploding conch shell.
