Sic semper tyrannis



         


Sic semper tyrannis, a Latin phrase meaning "Thus always to the tyrants", is the state motto of Virginia, recommended by George Mason to the Virginia Convention in 1776. It is also what John Wilkes Booth shouted after having shot Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
