Shinŭiju (Shinŭiju-shi) is the capital of North P'yŏngan Province, North Korea, on the border with China. The city is near Shinŭiju Special Administrative Region, which was established in 2002 to try introducing the market economy.

Geography

The city is on the border with China, which is marked by the Yalu River, which empties into Korea Bay at this location. The city is connected to Dandong, China by bridge via the Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge (also known as the China-Korea Friendship Bridge). This is one of the only ways to enter North Korea. The city is an endpoint on the Gyeongui railroad line (known as the P'yŏngui in the North).
