The seven states of north eastern India together constitute the Seven Sister states. This is due to the fact that they have more in common amongst them when compared to other states in Indian Union. The seven states are - Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
The seven states have predominantly tribal population, are hilly with dense forests and for most part of history independent. The complete merger of these state was possible only during British Raj. The work of Christian missionaries in area lead to large scale conversion of the tribal population into Christianity. Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya are the only states in India with a majority Christian population.
The states are heavily forested and get plenty of rainfall making them a tourist delight. There are beautiful wildlife sanctuaries, tea-estates and mighty rivers like Brahmaputra. The region is home to one-horned rhinoceros, elephants and other endangered wildlife.
Main industries in the region are tea-based, crude oil and natural gas, silk, bamboo and handicrafts. Tourism is developing.
Large scale insurgency and inter-tribal tensions have caused serious damage to the image of mostly peaceful region.
