Seoul National University is South Korea's oldest university. The university's main campus is located in Seoul. The university is generally regarded among Koreans as the most desirable post-secondary institution to attend, and routinely recruits the highest-scoring students in the annual South Korean university entrance examinations.
The university's English name translates its former Korean name, "Gungnip Seoul Daehakgyo" (국립 서울 대학교); but the university's name in Korean is now simply "Seoul Daehakgyo" ("Seoul University").
Its predecessor was founded in Seoul in 1924 as the sixth Imperial University of Japan. Its original name was "Keijo Imperial University" (京城帝国大学 Keijō Teikoku Daigaku, 경성제국대학 Gyeongseong Jeguk Daehak, abbreviated to 城大 Jōdai). After World War II, it was temporarily renamed to Gyeongseong University.
Seoul National University was founded on October 15, 1946 by reorganizing Gyeongseong University and some technical schools. The university ignores its forerunners, but some colleges trace back their histories to Keijo Imperial University.
