Selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor
Selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (NARIs) are a class of medication which inhibits the reuptake of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline in the brain. NARIs are widely used in the treatment of ADHD, but they are far less used than either SSRIs or SNRIs in the treatment of clinical depression.
As of 2004, the only approved NARI available in the US by FDA is atomoxetine. It is however only approved for use in ADHD and not as an antidepressant. However, outside the North American market, another NARI reboxetine mesilate (marketed by Pharmacia & Upjohn) has been shown to be effective against depression and panic disorder.
