Secretary of State for External Affairs (Canada)



         


Canada's Secretary of State for External Affairs was, from 1909 to 1993, the member of the Cabinet of Canada responsible for overseeing the federal government's international relations and the now-defunct Department of External Affairs.

Noted Secretaries of State for External Affairs have included Lester Pearson, Paul Martin, Sr., Allan MacEachen, Mitchell Sharp and Joe Clark.

Before World War II, it was general practice for the Prime Minister of Canada to concurrently hold the position. The position was replaced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
