Schiedam



         


city in South Holland, in the west of the Netherlands. It has a relatively high population density, due to its small land area. To the west is Vlaardingen, separated by a motorway, and to the east Schiedam is joined with Rotterdam. To the south is the Nieuwe Maas River.

Schiedam traditionally had an economy based on distillation of jenever (Gin).

It received city rights in 1275.
