Saray was the capital of the Golden Horde. It was founded in the 13th century by Batu Khan on the left bank of the river Akhtuba. In 1472 and 1480, it was pillaged by the Russians and in 1501 was completely destroyed by khan Mengli-Girey, a Moscow ally.
Saray is also another transliteration for Sarai.
